Press Releases: a few things NOT to do
For the past year I have had the opportunity to sit on the other side of the media table, in the editor’s chair, for a community Web portal. Over the course of the past year I’ve received press releases from a wide range of organizations. Being in the editor’s chair has given me a new perspective on how to write press releases that get attention.
Based on my observations, here are a few things NOT to do:
1. Do not send five e-mails in the same day, all with the subject line “press release.” The subject should tell the editor what the release is about and why they should bother to open it. If it doesn’t, they may not bother.
