Three Key Points about Media Relations
by Frank Williams
Some situations I have encountered with clients over the past few days have reminded me of three key points about dealing with the media:
1. Your press release may not be as newsworthy as you think. Everyone thinks their own story is the most newsworthy thing happening that day. Okay, maybe that is a bit exaggerated — but the point is that your potential story may not be as interesting to a reporter as you expect it to be. In fact, they may have received tips on multiple stories just like yours. Media outlets — especially newspapers — are increasingly short-staffed, and they receive far more press releases and news tips than they can possibly cover. If your story is not truly newsworthy, they may be hard pressed to cover it.
