Public Relations Lessons from the BP Oil Spill

For the past two months, much of America’s attention has been focused on the unfolding disaster resulting from the explosion of BP’s oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico. I believe we are all united in our hope and prayer that those charged with capping the well and getting the leak under control will be able to do so soon. As someone who lives in coastal North Carolina and values our coastal resources, that is certainly my hope and prayer.
With that being said, I believe the aftermath of the BP oil spill offers a few public relations lessons.

Rich Galen served as press secretary to Newt Gingrich when Gingrich was the Republican Whip in the U.S. House of Representatives and later as communications director when Gingrich was Speaker of the House.

Pioneer Strategies’ president addresses Leland Business Association, discusses 12 Keys to Effective Business Networking
LELAND, N.C. – Frank Williams, a Brunswick County native and president of Pioneer Strategies, Inc., addressed a gathering of the Leland Business Association (LBA) on Wednesday, June 9. Williams discussed 12 keys to effective business networking.
“Networking can be one of the most effective tools for building a strong, vibrant business,” says Williams. “Unfortunately, far too many people go about networking the wrong way. In some cases, they shoot themselves in the foot by focusing on getting an immediate sale rather than building a relationship. In other cases, they expend a great deal of energy networking in all the wrong places. My talk focused on a few simple, fundamental keys to building a strong, lasting network of business contacts.”
Poll: Americans See Local Newspaper Reporting As More Reliable Than Online News
According to a recent poll by Rasmussen Reports, a more Americans still trust their local newspapers than online news sources.
According to the poll:
- 78% see the reporting by their local newspapers as being at least somewhat reliable, up eight points from results found in March of last year. Only 14% do not see their local newspapers’ reporting as being reliable.
- 66% of adults see reporting from Internet sources as reliable, showing virtually no change from a year ago. Sixteen percent (16%) do not view online sources that way.
